FDOT is changing the way we plan our roads!  In 2014, the FDOT State Secretary signed a Complete Streets Implementation Policy, which is a key component of improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety and providing truly context sensitive solutions to the community.  The policy highlights an approach to transportation planning that connects land use and planning by “building the right road in the right place for the right purpose”.

We will be working with our agency partners and local communities to find ways to make sure state roads fit in to the community context, support local needs, and still achieve mobility goals.  The policy, as well as a Complete Streets Handbook will be integrated into other FDOT guidance such as the Florida Greenbook and FDOT’s Plans Preparation Manual.

Jackson Street in Downtown Tampa

We are working closely with the City of Tampa to develop a multimodal solution along SR 60/Kennedy Boulevard and Jackson Street in downtown Tampa.  The project will construct the first dedicated cycle track on a state road in the state of Florida.  It reduces the travel lanes and provides on street parking. The recommended concept balances mobility with economic development and bicycle/pedestrian connectivity.  Design is nearly complete and construction of the first segment should begin later this year.

21^st/22^nd Street in Ybor City

With the construction of the I-4/ Selmon Connector, truck traffic is now restricted from traveling through historic Ybor City.  Working with local organizations and the City, we reconstructed 21st/ 22nd Streets to meet the goals of the Ybor City Vision Plan. The reconstruction includes seven blocks of lane-reduction and on-street parking, as well as continuous bike lanes, wide sidewalks, and other amenities.

This project was selected for the Chairman’s Award at the 34^th Annual Planning and Design Awards sponsored by the Planning Commission.
